Simulation models used to prepare for outbreaks of highly infectious disease benefit from improved transmission parameters. However, translating information gained from experimental studies to modeling inputs can be challenging. This webinar will highlight several recent analyses that aim to improve our understanding and ability to model FMDV transmission in swine. The first analysis focuses on estimating incubation-phase transmission and the minimum estimated shedding quantity in oropharyngeal fluid that marks the transition from latent to infectious. Next, we estimated the exposure dose that contact-exposed pigs received in these experiments and examined how that influenced their infection dynamics. Improved understanding of the onset of infectiousness and the complex interplay between exposure dose and infection dynamics can strengthen interpretation of experimental studies for model parameterization.

Speakers

  • Dr Karla Moreno-Torres is a is a veterinary epidemiologist at Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education fellow who collaborates with the USDA–APHIS–VS–CEAH Monitoring and Modeling unit and with FADRU–ARS USDA–PIADC. Dr. Moreno’s research involves computational modeling of infectious diseases in livestock and wildlife populations. Her current projects include parameterization of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) states and modeling the infection dynamics of FMD virus.
  • Dr Amy Delgado currently serves as the Director of Monitoring and Modeling at the Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health, part of USDA’s Veterinary Services – Science, Technology, and Analysis Services. Her unit’s work encompasses the collection and analysis of US animal health information through national surveys of livestock producers as part of the National Animal Health Monitoring System, outbreak investigations, and economic and epidemiologic modeling to support decisions related to emergency response.

Moderator:

Dr Graeme Garner

Dr Graeme Garner is the new coordinator for the EuFMD modelling Network. Prior to joining EuFMD in September 2017, he worked for the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources where he managed the Epidemiology and One Health Program. Graeme has worked on a wide range of animal health projects both in Australia and overseas, with a particular interest in developing and using epidemiological models to support animal health policy, disease planning and emergency response.

The Modelling network webinar series was established to give network members the opportunity to share their work with colleagues, and to discuss issues relevant to the group.

The objective of the EuFMD Modelling Network is to promote a better understanding of epidemiological and economic models that are used to inform contingency planning for infectious diseases, and to improve the dialog and awareness between model developers and model users. The network is open to model developers and users within government, academia and research institutions with an interest in its objectives, from Europe and beyond.
