:: Network analysis and disease transmission: Porcine epidemic diarrhea outbreak in Canada::

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) emerged in Canada in early 2014. At that time, the outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) in the United States of America was at its peak, with high prevalence of infectious herds. Pork producing provinces in Canada have strong trade  links with pork-producing regions in the US, with animal movement that is almost exclusively from Canada to the US. Consequently, due to epidemiology of the virus, the incursion of PED to Canada was not surprising. However, the mechanism by which this occurred was not expected. Early findings from outbreak investigation and experimental studies suggested strong links to feed contaminated with PEDV. In this presentation, findings from network analysis based on case-control study will be presented. In addition, assessment of potential for spread of infectious disease through network analysis based on data from commercial databases will also be discussed.

Speaker: Dr Zvonimir Poljak

is an Associate Professor at the Department of Population Medicine, University of Guelph (Canada). The main area of his research is investigation of spread and control of infectious diseases in large populations of animals, primarily swine. Majority of his work is currently focused on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, influenza A virus in swine, and Streptoccus suis.

Moderator: Dr Graeme Garner

is the coordinator for the EuFMD modelling Network. Prior to joining EuFMD in September 2017, he worked for the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources where he managed the Epidemiology and One Health Program. Graeme has worked on a wide range of animal health projects both in Australia and overseas, with a particular interest in developing and using epidemiological models to support animal health policy, disease planning and emergency response.

The Modelling network webinar series was established to give network members the opportunity to share their work with colleagues, and to discuss issues relevant to the group. The objective of the EuFMD Modelling Network is to promote a better understanding of epidemiological and economic models that are used to inform contingency planning for infectious diseases, and to improve the dialog and awareness between model developers and model users. The network is open to model developers and users within government, academia and research institutions with an interest in its objectives, from Europe and beyond.
