Summary: The webinar discusses risks and challenges associated with managing infected animal carcasses resulting from animal disease outbreaks, such as avian influenza or foot and mouth disease virus.  The presentations covers traditional carcass management approaches, such as burning and burial, and how those approaches have had adverse impacts when used on a large scale. The webinar also details the physical and chemical mechanisms related to burial which can have severe public health consequences, depending on the specific location, and also indicates how the consequences can be mitigated through engineering design. Most importantly, the presentation covers lessons learned from other countries, including the US experience during the 2015 highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in the mid-Western US.The webinar will conclude with a summary of strategies to reduce the identified risks.
