the private sector view

Following-up the last PCP Practitioner theme on Stakeholders, the EuFMD asked three private-sector representatives to discuss their view on promoting FMD control. Their discussions will focus on vaccine delivery, in particular delivery of FMD vaccines to the field (“the last mile”) and different approaches to public-private partnerships.

  • How can public and private interests be better engaged for improving FMD control in East Africa? - by George Matete

  • How public policy would better enable private sector delivery of medicines and/or vaccines? - by Joseph Kitur

  • How can we transform the demand- as well as supply – at the “last-mile level”? - by Jeremiah Karuga


Opening

  • Isabelle Dieuzy-Labaye is senior advisor on Public-Private Partnership for the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)

Speakers

  • Dr George Matete currently works as a technical advisor for the government of Uganda under the EU funded project “Developing a Market – Oriented and Environmentally Sustainable Beef Meat Industry in Uganda Project (MOBIP).” He holds a PhD in Veterinary Public health and Economics with a bias towards the establishment of livestock identification, tracking and disease tracing systems for Rural Institutions.
  • Dr Joseph Kitur is currently marketing manager for Boehringer Ingelheim in East Africa covering 9 countries in the region. He is a veterinarian by training (University of Nairobi) and holds an MBA with a major in business strategy.
  • Dr Jeremiah Karuga is Regional Manager East Africa for Zoetis since 2015 and Operations Lead for Zoetis and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded ALPHA initiative in Uganda. He holds a bachelor in food science and technology (University of Nairobi) and an executive MBA (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology).
